Nestled in the heart of Long Beach at 4911 2nd Street, Northern Cafe Long Beach brings an authentic taste of Northern Chinese cuisine that delights both locals and visitors alike. Specializing in bold, vibrant flavors from the Szechuan and Northern Chinese culinary traditions, this restaurant stands out with an expansive menu that offers something for every palate.
From the very first bite, Northern Cafe impresses with its masterfully crafted dishes, such as the signature Chongqing Chicken—a perfectly crisp, juicy chicken dish balanced by an intoxicating blend of spicy peppers and aromatic seasonings that linger deliciously on the tongue. Diners rave about the complex and spicy Szechuan Boiled Fish, where tender fish fillets swim in a deeply flavorful, mouth-tingling broth that showcases the restaurant's command of bold spices and heat.
For noodle lovers, the Beef Noodle Soup and the fragrant Dan Dan Noodles are must-tries. The noodles come perfectly al dente, embracing the rich, savory broths and sauces that evoke the true essence of Northern Chinese street food. The steamed pork soup dumplings (小笼包) deliver a comforting burst of savory broth and tender pork in each bite, while the garlic cucumber salad provides a refreshing, crisp counterpoint with its cool, tangy, and garlicky notes.
Northern Cafe goes beyond classic staples, offering standout specialties such as the Garlic Pork Ribs—stir-fried with a generous, aromatic garlic punch—and the Mongolian Beef, which sizzles with a harmonious blend of spicy chili and sweet soy flavors. Seafood aficionados will appreciate the housemade Steamed Seafood Pork Dumplings featuring shrimp, scallop, sea cucumber, and pork, each dumpling a delicate treasure. The Fried Shrimp Pops and Pot Stickers add satisfying textures and flavors, rounding out a culinary experience that’s both adventurous and comforting.

Others highlight the balance of authenticity and approachability in every dish, appreciating the rich flavors without the heaviness often found in Chinese cuisine.

It’s a place where bold spices meet careful technique, and where every dish invites you to savor the rich heritage of Northern Chinese cuisine in the heart of Southern California.
If I could give 100/10 stars to Northern cafe, I would! This is the BEST Northern cafe branch, which is saying a lot because they’re all so good. The food here is outstanding (get the oil spill noodles and of course the dumplings), but what really sets this place apart is the staff. They’re attentive, kind, and will always go the extra mile to make customers feel at home. Eduardo, Paulina, Liam, Juan, Christian, Gladys, Chris, and the whole staff here are one in a million. We’ve become regulars and always leave happier than when we come in thanks to them. Do yourselves a favor and pay them a visit!
Finally got around to eating here. Been craving soup dumplings for a while, wanted to try this place out. Just got the regular pork ones, but while the flavor was great, it did lack the "bite and sip" for more than half of them. The Chongqing chicken, on the other hand, was phenomenal and exactly what I love in Chinese cooking. Meat was juicy, perfectly crispy, and the peppers were balanced between spicy and a little bit of numbing, but NOT overwhelming. Would love to come back and try other things.
We had so much fun at this restaurant! Chris, our server, was so helpful and friendly. He recommended several dishes we would like as a family of 4 with two teenagers. It is family style and we shared all of the dishes. Everything was delicious. We would absolutely go again when in Long Beach.
It can be a hit or a miss with Chinese food. Our friends introduced this place to us and I am very glad to say that this place was a hit with us. Delicious food and not overly greasy (as in other places). The place is very big and very spacious. Cool staff, they were very busy. This place has vegetarian\vegan options. We ordered Sautéed Mushroom, Vegetarian Eggplant W Garlic Sauce, Vegetarian Mapo Tofu, Steamed Vegetarian Dumplings and Red Bean buns. Absolutely loved all the dishes. The Red Bean buns took forever to come, so order in advance as it takes a while to be cooked. But it was a delightful, very soft bun with yummy filling. Their portions are not very generous as other Chinese places but the food is just so delicious. Would we visit this place again? A hell yes!!
THANK YOU for amazing service and food. I appreciate such great great service!!! Everyone here was very attentive and friendly.Special shout out to our waitor CHRISTIAN he gave us great recommendations and all of the options we order were scrumptious. The Stirfry noodle, garlic cucumber and the mojitos were soooo yummy that's just to name a few things we ordered...We are looking forward to coming back thank you ALL again!! See you soon.
My favorite option for Chinese food in Long Beach. Highly recommend the beef roll and pork/seafood soup dumplings. Plus plenty of beer / sake options! Five stars
